High-End Garage

Lewes, East Sussex

A spectacular example of high-end interior design and collaboration

Our professional interior designers aren’t limited to designing houses. This brilliant garage was designed and project managed from start to finish by Pfeiffer Design. Collaborating with a trusted professional team including architects, structural engineers and a main contractor; this project was a major undertaking, the build itself taking over a year to complete.

An atmospheric lighting scheme

The Pfeiffer Design team designed and project managed this Garage build, situated near Lewes in East Sussex, engaging many of our various design packages, including general arrangement, sanitary design & specification of flooring and wall finishes. Lighting design was a crucial element of the design brief. The double-height space with exposed steel trusses provided the ideal opportunity to create an atmospheric lighting scheme, utilising a combination of decorative sculptural pendants, industrial-inspired articulated wall lights and concealed LED strip lighting, contemporary track lights and carefully positioned and concealed up-lighters – providing the perfect ambient lighting to really show off the cars! All programmed into a Lutron system, the lighting design is truly customisable and easily controllable from the keypad – or an iPhone. The outdoor lighting scheme has been sensitively designed and carefully integrated into the landscape design, highlighting the exterior courtyard planting and traditional Sussex gabions and flint wall.

Integrating artwork into the garage was a crucial part of our brief, and lends a sense of playfulness and fun to the garage. These original edition James Bond posters were specified and sourced by our team early on in the design process, allowing us to design the lighting scheme around them – utilising the Lampe Gras wall lights by DCW Editions situated over each one to provide articulated targeted lighting in place of traditional picture lights.

Flexible internal spaces for entertaining and housing guests

Situated in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the exterior of the Garage has been designed in keeping with the traditional style of the adjacent buildings, and has a barn-style appearance when viewed from the outside. In contrast, the interior is a contemporary open-plan design featuring an exposed steel-frame with steel trusses over the double-height spaces. Incorporating a mezzanine floor with a perimeter balustrade and various flexible internal spaces, allowing the cars to be viewed from above, as well as a bathroom, kitchen and bar – providing flexible entertaining space and additional accommodation if required, a stone’s throw from the main dwelling.

Separated by contemporary fluted pocket doors, the entertaining and garage spaces seamlessly flow into each other, the flooring consciously kept consistent throughout to allow for a greater sense of unity between garage and entertainment area.
