St John’s College is an independent special educational needs (SEN) school and specialist college, which provides education, care and medical therapy to young people aged seven to 25. At its campus in Brighton’s Kemptown district, it runs Scrummies Cafe, where students prepare breakfast, lunch and hot drinks for over 140 of their peers and staff every weekday.
Pfeiffer Design was appointed, together with local practice MHD Architects, to develop a commercial interior for this innovative and rewarding enterprise. Our brief was to make it bright and engaging, and incorporate a ‘Brighton’ theme. We had only a restricted budget to work with, but with such an enthusiastic client, the whole project was a joy. As well as specifying lighting, flooring and other elements, we also designed and made all the built-in furniture and seating cubes, smartly finished in the Scrummies brand colours.
