Wedding Venue

Lewes

A historic setting for a day to remember

Southover Grange is a hidden gem at the heart of Lewes. This Grade II* Listed manor house, built in 1572, now belongs to East Sussex County Council, which hires it out as a popular wedding venue. When the Council announced a £1.5 million renovation, we were delighted to be appointed to design the interiors of the ceremonial rooms and ancillary spaces. We worked on this prestigious project for more than a year as part of a large team, providing on-site advice as well as design expertise.

Lighting was a major component of our brief, and our lighting design combined technical hidden LEDs with amazing decorative luminaries. In the main hall, which had always been rather dark and gloomy, we specified a four-metre crystal installation: it took five people to put it in place, but the result is spectacular.

Historic connections, contemporary comforts

Our design challenge was to enhance and enliven the function rooms, while maintaining compliance with their Grade II* Listed status. Our concept had to respect the building’s past, while introducing the comforts and convenience today’s users expect.

We wanted to create a luxurious environment, reminiscent of a boutique or country house hotel, that would inspire couples considering it for their wedding. It was important to give the wedding spaces real grandeur and a sense of occasion, but without being overwhelming or feeling like a museum. By combining the building’s unique heritage and atmosphere with our understanding of modern tastes and requirements, we created a setting that would provide a seamless, relaxing experience from initial viewing to the big day itself.
